Born in Detroit, and raised in Lincoln Park, Michigan, Rob recalls sparking an
interest in music at the age of 8, when his father taught him some of the basics
on harmonica. Soon after, he began searching for a better connection to the
newer music of “Rock & Roll“. Rob had a close friend who played saxophone
who had an older brother who was a drummer in a band. Well, boys will be
boys, and Rob’s deep desire to be in a band led his trying out the drums when
his friend’s big brother was away. Rob got hooked!
In 1963, Rob began playing drums with his first band “The Young Boys”.
From there he went on to play with many groups: “ The Pyramids “ “The Four
Souls”, “ The Demonico’s “, “ The Cheaters “, “ West River Drive “, “ Night
Moods ”, “ Soul Mates “, “ Back 2 Back” and more. So many, it’s hard for him
to remember all the band names! What he does clearly recall though, is the
wonderful time spent with some great musicians.
Rob’s passion is expressed in his heartfelt playing style, whether it’s Motown,
jazz, blues, wedding standards & country, to Classic & Oldies Rock & Roll -
almost any type of music gives him a charge. “It’s a real natural high when we
all connect as one to the harmony and soul of the music.”
In 1965 at age 16, Rob performed at the Michigan state fair with a warm up
band for “The Four Seasons.” It was a privilege and memory of lifetime for
him. He also played at a huge Battle of the Bands held at the Ohio State Fair.
The band he performed with, “The Cheaters”, took second place and won a
$500 dollar prize - big money to a young musician then. One of the musicians
they defeated was a young Mitch Ryder and his band. A photo of the group
along with an interview with Rob was published by The Detroit News. That
was an awesome feeling for him!
Early musical influences for Rob were rock & roll artists like Ricky Nelson,
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Drifters, The Ventures, Four Tops, Marvin
Gay, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys and a host of others performing during
that era.
Having performed various genres over the past 45 years, Rob’s passion to
play the drums is rooted in pleasing a live audience. Even when he was
stationed in Turkey while serving in the U.S. Air Force, he formed a band with
a violinist, harmonica player and a guitarist. For percussion, he managed to
put together some makeshift drums made with different sized cans and local
donkey hide. Rob said they had some real great times making music 8,000
feet up on a mountain top all hours of the day and night.
Names like Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Stan Lynch, and Phil Collins come to
mind when you ask him about his favorite drummers. He says there is a never
ending list of talents that give their heart and soul to playing. And Rob
performs with the same level of enthusiasm and gusto. Playing drums is a
passionate lifelong commitment for him. He adds a real strong and steady
back beat to LEGEND The Band.

"I hope to be playing many years from now, or at least until I can't pick up my drum sticks anymore!"
